In 1848 Whitehurst became editor of a Springfield temperance paper, the Illinois Organ. The next year June 12, 1849 he married Maria C. Matheny, the sister of Al’s friend James Matheny. Together they had 7 children. Later he served as deputy circuit clerk in Sangamon County and in the 1860s as circuit clerk.
Whitehurst is remembered as a fair lawyer and a good businessman. He died on May 19^th 1875.
